5 Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth

5 Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth

How to Thoughtfully Celebrate Juneteenth This Year

JUNETEENTH is short for June 19th, and it commemorates the day that the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the U.S in Texas received word that the civil war had ended and they had been liberated and freed!

In the following years, the anniversary of this event was celebrated and honored in Galveston, Texas through parades, parties and gatherings...now, Juneteenth is celebrated annually, officially marked as a U.S Holiday.

No matter how Juneteenth is celebrated, it has ultimately and rightfully become a time of celebrating and sharing stories of resistance, liberation and resilience.

Here are 5 easy and thoughtful ways Cleo+Coco is celebrating Juneeteenth

1. Learn The History of Juneteenth: Today has been celebrated for hundreds of years, but it's not until now (that it's a National Holiday) that we have become more curious about the history of Juneteenth. A great way to learn more is to turn to historical sites! We recommend The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture website.

2. Support Black Owned Businesses: Did you know that though black Americans make up 13% of the U.S population, only 2% of them are small business owners; while 82% of small businesses are owned by white Americans - Let's help evenly distribute the financial capital while supporting the success of black owned businesses.

3. Read Books Written by Black Authors: What better way to learn about the history of Black Americans and their ancestors journey to freedom than from generational knowledge and storytelling? From freedom poems to novels, we can educate ourselves and others while supporting the success of black authors by enjoying their stories and literature.

4. Advocate for Racial Justice: Whether its a parade, a local forum or supporting policies for racial justice and equality, dedicating time to create change in your community is one of the BIGGEST ways to celebrate JUNETEENTH.

5.Donate to Black Led Non Profits & Organizations: Black activism across the country has been led and backed by the help of Non Profits for years. These organizations help educate communities on the needs of black communities as well as addressing systemic injustice while aiding and fundraising for inequality initiatives.
