Aluminum is the primary ingredient in antiperspirant deodorants and is used to 'block' the sweat glands. Aluminum poses serious health risks like Alzheimer's Disease and breast cancer. The link between aluminum and breast cancer has controversial studies but since most breast cancers develop in the upper outer quadrant of the breast, closest to the armpit where the lymph nodes are located, many research suggests that long-term use of aluminum is factoring into the formation of certain breast cancers.
2. The blocking of sweat glands:
Your underarms are close to your lymph nodes and the accumulation of toxins from the sweat there that isn't being perspired is potentially causing damage under your armpits. Long-term buildup caused by blocked sweat glands can potentially lead to cell mutation.
3. Propylene Glycol
Frequently used in Deodorants, propylene Glycol is a petroleum based substance used to create the soft and sleek consistency we are used to in our deodorants. It is inexpensive to use and very versatile and acts as a penetration enhancer increasing the absorption of the harmful chemicals it is paired with (like aluminum). There have been reports on PGs potential toxicity liking it to complications such as:
- Reproductive problems
- Developmental abnormalities,
- Endocrine complications.
Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals that help dissolve other ingredients and are a probable human carcinogen. The US does continuously regulate these chemicals, yet they are still prevalent in many deodorants today. Phthalates are often hiding under the ingredient list as a "Fragrance" and are therefore not often listed outright in your deodorant ingredients list. Phthalates have been linked to several health issues and are considered to be endocrine disruptors since one they are absorbed by the body, they act as estrogens. The estrogens conflict with your hormonal function and cause a variety of complications such as:
- Decreased sperm count,
- Breast, prostate and ovarian cancers,
- Liver, kidney and lung damage,
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies the perineal (genital) use of talc-based body powder as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
It is not clear if consumer products containing talcum powder increase cancer risk. Studies of personal use of talcum powder have had mixed results, although there is some suggestion of a possible increase in ovarian cancer risk.
Until more information is available, people concerned about using talcum powder may want to avoid or limit their use of consumer products that contain it.
The FDA has classified triclosan as a pesticide. It’s used to kill bacteria in the manufacturing process, as well as when it comes in contact with your skin. When triclosan is combined with water it can also create a carcinogenic gas called chloroform. It is found still today in the marjority of common deodorants.
6. TEA and DEA
Triethanolamine (TEA) and diethanolamine (DEA) are chemicals that can seep into your skin and affect your liver and kidneys. They’re so harmful that these two chemicals have already been banned from products in Europe because they are known carcinogens.
